Objectives This subject is designed to provide basic skills in selecting materials, processes and assembly procedures for thermoplastics and composites, understanding of different testing procedures, skills in solving problems developed during processing and an understanding of basic wear mechanisms and friction.
Synopsis Material selection check lists. Testing procedures. Polymer additives. Effect of processing on thermoplastic properties. Trouble shooting product failures. Material, shape and process selection using the Ashby approach. Adhesive selection and joint design. Thermoplastic welding. Mechanical fastening. Finishing operations. Composite design. Fibre, resin and fabric selection. Laminate design. Wear and friction of polymers.
Assessment Course work and tests: 30%
