Objectives To understand metals and their various strengthening mechanisms and appreciate the properties, uses and economics of materials selection.

Synopsis Strengthening mechanisms of metals. Phase diagrams. Iron-carbon phase diagram. Isothermal transformation diagrams. Heat treatment of steel. Dispersion hardening. Carbon steels, alloy steels and cast irons. Non-ferrous metals and alloys of engineering importance. Materials selection. The relationship between materials selection and materials processing.

Assessment Examination (3 hours): 70%
* Laboratory work and test: 30%
