R Jones

4 points
* 22 lecture hours and 11 tutorial hours
* Second semester
* Clayton
* Prerequisites: MEC2450, MEC3408

Objectives The student is expected to acquire a fundamental understanding of the use of fracture mechanics and damage tolerant design principles both in industrial design and in assessing structural integrity.

Synopsis Single and multiple load paths; the concepts of principal structural elements; the damage tolerant philosophy; linear elastic fracture mechanics; fracture toughness; the T* integral limitation and growth rules; variable amplitude loading; and the alternating finite element method. Examples are to be derived from aerospace, maritime and manufacturing industries.

Assessment Examinations (3 hours): 80%
* Tutorial: 20%
