MAT3910

Integral transforms and calculus of variations

J C Lattanzio

3 points
* 26 lectures and 12 consultation and practical class hours
* First/second semester
* Clayton
* Prerequisites: MAT2910 and MAT2920

Objectives Students will be introduced to a number of mathematical techniques and it is expected that they will master these and be able to apply them to a range of (relatively simple) problems.

Synopsis This subject involves the use of special (Bessel and Legendre) functions to solve standard forms of certain partial differential equations; the elementary theory of the calculus of variations; the use of Laplace and Fourier transforms to solve differential, integral and other such equations; general properties of the forward and inverse Laplace and Fourier transforms.

Assessment Examinations (2 hours): 75%
* Other assessment: 25%
