Objectives The student is expected to develop skills in the application of optimisation techniques in process and management systems and to understand the central role of variability in statistical analysis and its impact on the design of experiments.

Synopsis Optimisation procedures. Integer programming formulation, zero-one programming, branch-and-bound algorithm. Goal programming. Design of experiments, engineering experimentation. Analysis of variance, fixed-effect and random effect models. Randomised blocks, latin squares, incomplete block design. Factorial design. Confounding.

Assessment Examination (2 hours): 70%
* Assignments and coursework: 30%
