Objectives To develop skills and understanding relating to the concepts, principles and thrust of TQM, and the principles and tools of SPC.

Synopsis Quality assurance; economic and organisation bases for the improvement of quality, the cost of poor quality; specifications and standards, functional relationships and special aspects such as motivation and visual inspection. Product liability and lifecycle costing. Quality manuals, requirements of AS3900 series. The use of variables in control charting, capability studies, cu-sum approached and acceptance sampling. The central role of data interpretation in the development and evaluation of design in supplier quality assurance, in-process control, the maintenance of plant and in the monitoring of field performance.

Assessment Assignments: 40%
* Examination (2 hours): 50%
* Seminar participation: 10%
