Objectives (1) To understand the fundamental principles of mechanical design and to develop skills to apply the fundamentals to typical design situations (2) to apply the design of machine elements to mechanical engineering systems.

Synopsis Introduction of machine design; design philosophy; analysis of stresses and strains; material properties and selection; design for strength and for rigidity; tolerance design; design of shafts; design of fastening components and joints; design of springs; selection of rolling element bearings; introduction of CAD/CAM.

Assessment Design project and assignments: 50%
* Examination: 50%
