Engineering practice

* Prerequisite: Admission to the Bachelor of Engineering course
* Problem-based learning, practical and laboratory classes, industry visits

Objectives To make the students aware of the practices of professional engineering, to help students understand the role of engineering in society, to develop communication and information retrieval skills - verbal, aural, visual, electronic; to provide an introduction to engineering problem solving.

Synopsis Engineering successes and failures, engineering in industry and society, impact on the environment, professional engineering practice and engineering ethics, the different branches of engineering and their special knowledge and skills, engineering case studies, introduction to engineering systems, visualisation, simple modelling, analogies, sources of information and information retrieval, communication of engineering ideas by speaking, writing, sketching, new and emerging technologies. There will be a number of lectures by senior practising engineers. A series of plant visits will add to the excitement of the subject.
