Objectives To provide new engineering students with an understanding of what engineers actually do, and of the environment in which they work and interact with other engineers and with the community. To help develop team management concepts and the ability to communicate technical issues in a clear way.

Synopsis Introduction to engineering; the systems approach to engineering problems and their solutions; sustainable development, ecology and the environment; lifecycle concepts, quality and economic analysis; engineering ethics. Group work, written reports and oral presentations.

Assessment Class work and assignments: 70%
* Examination: 30%
