Objectives To gain an overview of electrical, electronic and magnetic properties of materials.

Synopsis Electrical materials: electronic conduction, energy band model, intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors. Capacitance and sheet resistance. Magnetic materials: magnetic domains, hysteresis, hard and soft magnetic materials, magnetic anisotropy, single domain structures, magnetic storage, magnetic ferrites, Hall effect, galvo-thermo-magnetic effects. Ferroelectric materials. Optical materials; super conductivity. Electrochemical corrosion principles.

Assessment Examination: 70%
* Tutorial work: 30%
