Objectives To introduce students to the profession of engineering and the means of oral and written communication used in the profession.

Synopsis The meaning of engineering as a profession, the training and nature of work of engineers, ethical considerations. Engineers as designers and managers in the economic environment. An introduction to some economic concepts, quality, benchmarking and intellectual property. Written reports, letters, memos, oral presentations and debates.

Assessment Written assignment: 30%
* Oral presentation: 30%
* Tests and exams: 40%
