Objectives The student is expected to develop an understanding of the major video telecommunication issues, fundamentals of video coding, different compression techniques and current practice in international standards.

Synopsis Digital image and video formats; redundancy in images; predictive coding; motion compensation; transform coding; hybrid coding; subband coding; visual psychophysics; vector quantisation; entropy or Huffman coding; international standards.

Assessment Examination (2 hours): 60%
* Assignments: 40%
