Digital transmission and optical systems

D B Keogh and L N Binh

4 points
* 24 lectures, 9 tutorials and 9 laboratory hours
* First semester
* Clayton
* Prerequisites: ECS3341

Objectives The student is expected to acquire a broad knowledge of data transmission on metallic bearers and microwave radio systems including the analysis of performance in the presence of noise and an understanding of the effects of other impairments. The student is also expected to develop the ability to analyse and characterise signal transmission in optical fibres and acquire a knowledge of techniques for optical transmission, reception and detection in coherent and incoherent optical transmission systems and networks.

Synopsis Data transmission: line codes; modulated digital data transmission systems including the spectra and error-rate performance of double-sideband suppressed-carrier, single-sideband, vestigial sideband and quadrature amplitude modulation. Fundamental optical fibre transmission properties: index profile, V-parameter, mode spot size and cut-off wavelength; effects on distortion and attenuation characteristics of single-mode optical fibres. Design of single-mode optical fibres exhibiting appropriate dispersion and loss characteristics; dispersion shifted or compensated fibres. Optical fibre link and systems design: power and rise-time budgets, optical amplifiers, optical receiver analysis and design, optical transmitters and optical fibre networks.

Assessment Examination (2 hours): 80%
* Practical work/Laboratory work: 20%
