The MPsych(Child and Educational) prepares graduates to practise as educational and child psychologists in schools, hospitals, clinics, and private practices. For more details regarding the role and employment prospects of educational and child psychologists, students should consult the College of Educational and Developmental Psychologists, Australian Psychological Society.

Course structure

The MPsych(Child and Educational) consists of three parts: advanced coursework, supervised practica and research thesis.

Coursework

The coursework entails (a) the two subjects:

Practica and research thesis

Students undertake a supervised practicum, GED1830 (Clinical placement in psychology).

The research thesis complies with the regulations for the MPsych as laid down in the regulations section of this handbook but must be completed on a topic relevant to the discipline of child and educational psychology. Students should consult with the course coordinator regarding their choice of topic for the thesis.

Length of course/workload required

This course consists of two years full-time study. The expected number of hours per week for a full-time student is forty-eight.

The closing date for applications is usually late in November and selection for the MPsych(Counselling) and MPsych(Child and Educational) may include an interview, usually held in the first two weeks of December.

Details of all subjects, including reading lists, follow the course information in this handbook. Not all subjects are offered each year and students should consult the timetable or the course adviser.
