Course code: 2040

The teaching English to speakers of other languages pathway is designed
primarily to meet the requirements of trained teachers who wish to gain higher
professional qualifications and expertise in the field of teaching English to
speakers of other languages.
The objectives of the TESOL pathway are to provide students with:
- knowledge and understanding of current research and theories, as well as
of teaching methodologies and language policies which relate to the teaching
and learning of spoken and written English as a second or foreign language;
- skills in developing, delivering and evaluating appropriate TESOL
teaching programs and strategies.
Students will engage in learning
experiences which should develop attitudes and values to enable them to:
- value the cultural and linguistic heritage of ESOL learners in Australia,
migrants, refugees and visitors alike;
- empower ESOL learners to take part effectively in the broader Australian
(or other English-speaking) society.
Applicants who are not native speakers of English will be required to
demonstrate substantial competence in written and spoken English before
admission.
Credit for all subjects undertaken as part of either a Graduate
Certificate in TESOL or a Graduate Diploma in TESOL in this Faculty may be
transferred to the Master of Education (TESOL).
Teachers who have taught ESOL for three years full-time or longer may document
