The Postgraduate Diploma in Bilingual/Immersion Education is designed to accommodate teachers and school administrators involved in implementing a content-based immersion program in their school and to assist them to deepen their understanding of the processes of second language teaching and learning in such a context.
The major objectives of the Postgraduate Diploma in Bilingual/Immersion Education course are to provide teachers of languages other than English and school administrators involved in such programs with:
Candidates will hold a university degree or its equivalent and be school administrators or qualified teachers of a language other than English.
Applicants contemplating admission to this course may seek formal credit or recognition of prior learning. Applicants should apply for credit prior to enrolment but currently enrolled students may also apply. The Faculty of Education considers each application on its merits within the context of the faculty guidelines on credit transfer which are contained in a booklet `Learning from experience' available from the Professional Development Institute, Faculty of Education, Monash University, Gippsland campus, Churchill 3842 ($7 postage and packing).
Candidates who successfully complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Bilingual/Immersion Education will receive twenty-four points credit towards a Masters degree.
For the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Bilingual/Immersion Education, a candidate must satisfactorily complete the following four subjects in the order listed:
* GED3847 may be replaced by the Linguistics department's subject `Bilingualism'.
This course may be taken on campus by part-time study over two academic years. Each subject is of one-semester length and the option of summer school study will be provided for some subjects. The expected number of hours per week for a full-time student is forty-eight.
