The Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching Languages Other Than English is designed, in particular, to accommodate teachers in Department of Education schools who are re-training as LOTE teachers, as well as teachers in other sectors who wish to upgrade their qualification to include the ability to teach a LOTE.

Candidates who successfully complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching Languages Other Than English may complete a postgraduate diploma or a masters degree by undertaking a further two or six units respectively.

Objectives

The major objectives of the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching Languages Other Than English course are to provide students with knowledge and understanding of:

Admission requirements

A three-year post Year 12 major in a language other than English or its recognised equivalent and demonstrated proficiency in the LOTE, and a recognised intial teaching qualification.

Credit provision

Applicants contemplating admission to this course may seek formal credit or recognition of prior learning. Applicants should apply for credit prior to enrolment but currently enrolled students may also apply. The Faculty of Education considers each application on its merits within the context of the faculty guidelines on credit transfer which are contained in a booklet `Learning from experience' available from the Professional Development Institute, Faculty of Education, Monash University, Gippsland campus, Churchill 3842 ($7 postage and packing).

Course structure

This postgraduate certificate consists of two subjects which must be completed in the following order:

(a) GED3800F LOTE methodology or GED3812 Educational applications of second-language acquisition research (or its equivalent from the Linguistics department) or GED3815 Classroom-based research in second-language education (or its equivalent from the Linguistics department) and GED3833 Theory and practice of second-language education

(b) GED3834F Advanced practicum in language teaching: LOTE component

All subjects are worth twelve points at postgraduate certificate/diploma or masters level.

Length of course/workload required

This course consists of one year full-time study or two years part-time taken on campus, including twenty-two days practicum. The expected number of hours per week for a full-time student is forty-eight.
