Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed an awareness of the range of research undertaken in the field of mathematics education; an understanding of the current research topics in mathematics education; skills of research analysis and critique; the ability to apply research procedures to mathematics education issues; the ability to determine the practical implications of a research study.

Synopsis This subject will provide opportunities for students to explore issues and recent research in mathematics education in some depth. These will include curriculum designs and theories, the implications of psychological research and other investigations in mathematics education. The subject will have a broad international perspective but will also look at recent research in Australia, with a consideration of the implications for the teaching of mathematics in the classroom at all levels. Students will be encouraged to pursue a particular research interest as well as working cooperatively with the group on topics of current interest. Wherever possible the subject will have a practical bias as well as evaluating previous research and investigations, and students will be encouraged and given the opportunity to develop skills and explore topics which may be used later in the project component.
