Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have a basic understanding of the nature of language and recognise the different aspects of language form, eg phonology, syntax and meaning; a general awareness of the relationship between language and society; and an awareness of the theories associated with SLA.

Synopsis The main aim of this subject is to introduce students to linguistics, applied linguistics and related fields that are relevant to the teaching of English as a second language (TESL).

Assessment One assignment: 40%
* Two assignments: 30% each
