Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to perform on the electronic keyboard or other approved instrument, demonstrating expanded repertoire and technical improvement; rehearse and perform music in an instrumental ensemble with confidence, accuracy and expression; read music from parts and scores in a variety of forms; perform instrumental music of a range of styles and periods; through involvement in performance, further develop their understanding of music theory, terminology and structure; show a commitment to the cooperative nature and responsibilities of group performance; demonstrate familiarity with selected repertoire from the twentieth century, and from non-western traditions and the ability to distinguish aurally the pieces studied; demonstrate understanding of the social, historical and cultural context of the repertoire studied, and of its influence on the music; display an improved ability to analyse music of different styles and origins, and to write about music with understanding and clarity; display an awareness of the diversity of the world's music, and the ability to consider all kinds of music with objectivity and cultural tolerance.

Synopsis (1) Practical: as for EDN1285. (2) Lectures: Unit 1 - The old and the new in the twentieth century; Unit 2 - An introduction to world music. (3) Instrumental ensemble workshop: practice and performance of various styles and repertoire for classroom orchestral, non-Western instruments and the voice for all students in music studies 3- 6.

Assessment Examination: 40%
* Practical work: 60%
