The Graduate Certificate in Public Policy and Management (GCPPM) is designed to cater for graduates who wish to undertake study in public policy and management at graduate level without necessarily proceeding to a graduate diploma or masters degree. The key areas of study are public management, public sector finance and public policy. Course content and subject assessment are geared to relating the material to current public sector issues and, where relevant, to workplace applications.

Admission requirements

Applicants should possess a pass degree or equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution plus a minimum of two years relevant employment experience. A candidate with a four-year honours degree of at least IIA (or equivalent) standard may be exempted from this provision.

Applicants without a first degree who have a minimum of six years appropriate employment experience should refer to the section on executive certificates.

Fees

This is a fee-paying course. Candidates should refer to the Graduate School of Government as to the 1998 course fee. Course fees are set and reviewed annually and are therefore subject to change.

Duration

The Graduate Certificate in Public Policy and Management is normally completed in two semesters of part-time study.

Mode of offering

This course is mainly taught on-campus at 30 Collins Street, Melbourne. Note that this course is also available by distance education.

Credit for work done previously

Candidates may be eligible for a maximum of two credit exemptions for subjects considered to be equivalent to particular subjects in the course of study. Candidates should refer to the Graduate School of Government for further details.

The course progression is designed to introduce students firstly to some of the key principles of public policy and public management, and secondly to some of the more significant contemporary developments in the field. The foundations established by the subjects in the first semester are subsequently built upon by the subjects in the second semester.

Progression to further studies

Students who successfully complete the Graduate Certificate in Public Policy and Management may apply for admission to the Graduate Diploma in Public Policy and Management.
