Objectives On completion of this subject students should be familiar with theories of management in the public sector, the change from a traditional bureaucratic model of administration to a market-based managerial model; and be able to understand the debate over managerialism.

Synopsis This subject introduces the theory and practice of management in the public sector. Emphasis is given to new models of public management, problems of accountability and control, financial management, institutions, bureaucracy, and similarities and differences between public and private management.

Assessment Seminar paper (2000- 3000 words): 20%
* Major essay (3000- 4000 words): 30%
* Examination (3 hours): 50%
