This course is designed to enhance and develop the knowledge and skills of accounting graduates in public practice, industry and academia. The degree encompasses studies at an advanced level in financial and managerial accounting, auditing, corporate and international finance and investments, and electives chosen from masters level subjects offered in banking, marketing and management. Students attain an advanced conceptual understanding of the fields of accounting and finance, complemented by a wide range of practical applications and case studies. Students also gain insight into research methodologies and techniques which extend and support their learning and expose them to the contemporary issues and problems confronting modern accountants and finance specialists.
The Master of Business (Accounting) aims to develop and enhance students' knowledge and skills of accounting and related fields. Students will obtain a thorough understanding of accounting and finance concepts, complemented by a wide range of practical applications. In addition, students' learning will be supported by exposure to research methodologies and techniques which will reveal to them contemporary issues and problems which confront accountants and financial specialists.
Applicants need to have completed, with an average grade of credit or above, an honours degree in a relevant discipline, or the Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Accounting or the Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Management, or an equivalent qualification fro a recognised tertiary institution. Students who have completed the Master of Practising Accounting may also apply for admission to this masters degree.
This is a fee-paying course. Candidates should consult the Department of Accounting and Finance as to the 1998 course fee. Course fees are set and reviewed annually and are therefore subject to change.
The Master of Business (Accounting) is normally completed in two semesters of full-time study or three semesters of part-time study.
Classes are offered on-campus at the Caulfield campus in two block teaching sessions Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 6- 10 pm and Saturday 9 am - 5 pm.
Candidates may be eligible for a maximum of four credit exemptions for subjects considered to be equivalent to particular subjects in the course of study. Please refer to the course director for further details.
Completion of the Master of Business (Accounting) will enable graduates to meet the academic requirements for admission to the CPA program of the Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants and the professional year program of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia as long as the students ensure that they complete the required mix of subjects in their degrees, especially the two law subjects, namely Australian taxation law and Australian corporations law.
