Course objectives

On completion of this course students will:

• have combined studies in the humanities and social sciences with a vocational and professional element by taking additional studies drawn from the major business disciplines;
• have acquired the depth and breadth of knowledge and skills to facilitate an administrative career in social welfare, education, the media professions and public administration; or
• have broadened their understanding of business disciplines by combining studies in the humanities and social sciences with major studies in business. This has particular relevance for students undertaking major studies in accounting, economics, management, tourism and marketing.

Admission requirements

The basic requirement for entry to the course is satisfactory completion of an upper secondary school program equivalent to the Victorian Certificate of Education. Applicants will be expected to successfully complete units 1 and 2 of Mathematics (any) and have a grade average of C in English.

Students who have completed the first year of the normal Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Business at the Gippsland campus with good academic results may be admitted to the second year of the double degree with full credit for appropriate first-year studies.

Mature-age applicants are assessed on the basis of their employment and overall educational background and career objectives.

Course structure

This course is normally completed over four years of full-time study or eight years of part-time/distance education study.

In order to complete the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Business degree a student must;

(a) complete appropriate subjects within the course to gain at least 192 points but not more than 216 points;

(b) complete a major of fifty-two points and a minor of twenty-eight points from the arts disciplines;

(c) complete the following compulsory core subjects;

• AFG1001 Introductory accounting A
• ECG1101 Introduction to economics
• TBG 1201 Introduction to business law
• MGG 1302 Management theory and functions
• MKG1401 Introduction to marketing
• GSC1601 Basic statistics and computing for social sciences
• GSC1602 Introduction to methods of social research

(e) undertake any additional studies to complete the minimum 192 points needed for the double degree.

Arts major and minor studies

Arts major and minor studies are available in the following areas.

Major studies

Gender studies, mass communications, history, politics, Indonesian, sociology, writing

Minor studies

Australian studies, community studies, journalism and all of the above arts major sequences.

Business major and submajor studies

Business major and submajor studies are available in the following areas.

Major studies

Accounting, economics, management, marketing, tourism management.

Submajor studies

Law and all of the above business major studies.
