Research skills for industrial and employee relations

Objectives On completion of this subject students should understand the techniques of data collection, manipulation and analysis, and be able to engage in both qualitative case study and quantitative research.

Synopsis The subject will focus upon the applied skills needed to collect primary data, how to use secondary data sources, data manipulation, and analysis and presentation of results. Students will be introduced to the basic elements of social survey techniques and the case study method as means of collecting data in a work setting. The subject will also make use of personal computer-based programs for data analysis. The subject includes a section on legal research and advocacy skills.

Assessment Written (assignments 4000 words): 40%
* Take-home examination: 60%
