Advocacy and negotiation

Objectives On successful completion of this course students will have acquired the skills, techniques and knowledge necessary to engage in advocacy and/or negotiations in the Australian industrial relations system.

Synopsis This subject builds on previous courses in employee and industrial relations and focuses on the development of practitioner skills. Topics will include: preparation and presentation of cases and submissions before industrial relations and other administrative tribunals; negotiation and administration of the collective agreement. Among the specific issues dealt with are bargaining units; grievance and disciplinary procedures; unfair dismissals; strategy and tactics in industrial negotiations; management and union rights; drafting the collective agreement. Students will participate in an interest dispute negotiation as a member of a management or employee negotiating team.

Assessment Tutorial paper: 30%
* Class test: 20%
* Negotiation practice case study: 50%
