Objectives On completion of this subject students will understand the process of developing and maintaining long, medium and short term business and manufacturing plans; understand the principles of modern production planning and control techniques; appreciate the role of forecasting and inventory management in planning; be able to develop measures of operating performance; and understand the difficulties and conflicting objectives of production scheduling.

Synopsis Scheduling for effective process coordination. Managing objectives of production planning. Long, medium and short term production planning. Production planning techniques such as MRP, MRPII, JIT and OPT, forecasting and inventory control. Order release algorithms and monitoring of performance will be discussed in the context of the effective implementation of new scheduling systems.

Assessment One individual assignment (1500 words): 20%
