Objectives On completion of this subject students should be familiar with the techniques applied to the evaluation of health services and programs; and with the theoretical debates over discounting, decision criteria, and the measurement of both costs and the quality of life.
Synopsis This subject consists of the study of the principles and techniques used in the economic evaluation of health services. Topics include effectiveness, efficiency and economic evaluation; cost benefit analysis; cost effectiveness and cost utility analysis; multi-attribute utility analysis; measuring utility; psychometric measurement theory; ethical issues in resource allocation; decision criteria; time discounting; costing.
Assessment Written (essay): 20%
