Objectives On completion of this subject students should comprehend the basic economic and financial theory related to the regulation of financial institutions and markets; understand Australian regulatory policies; be able to evaluate and compare Australian financial regulation with that of selected overseas countries; be able to explain different approaches to deposit insurance; be able to discuss international cooperation measures in financial regulatory policy.
Synopsis This subject examines the basis of financial regulation; the development of economic and financial regulatory theory; the application of specific regulatory theories; regulation, policies and the political process; financial regulation in Australia; financial regulation elsewhere (USA, Japan and others); alternatives to existing regulatory policies and deposit insurance; globalisation and international regulatory efforts.
