Contemporary Spanish fiction and film

Objectives On completion of this subject students should have acquired a broad knowledge of the different types of novels produced in Spain during the Francoist era and after. Through the careful analysis of the prescribed readings students will be able to understand the relationship between art and society, and to identify the main areas of concern of the most important Spanish thinkers of the second half of the twentieth century.

Synopsis This subject studies the different types of novels written in Spain from 1940 until the present day. Starting with Camilo José Cela, winner of the 1989 Nobel Prize for literature, and his classic work La colmena, this course concentrates on the social and artistic conditions of Spain under both the Francoist dictatorship and the democratic system of the 1980s and 1990s. The last part of the course will allow an exploration of feminist discourse in contemporary Spanish narrative, through the study of the novels by Garc'a Morales and Matute. A number of films will also be shown to complement the literary readings.
