Prerequisites: First-year SCY sequence or equivalent
Objectives On completion of this subject students will have acquired a sociological appreciation of the construction of male and female sexualities; love and sex; male and female sexuality through the life cycle; power and violence in sexual relationships; the social and political structures underpinning our sexual realities.
Synopsis Theoretical diversity in the study of sexuality; the social construction and regulation of sexuality; the production of masculinities and femininities; gendered/sexed bodies; sexuality and political contestation; definitions of `normality', sexual diversity, challenges and resistances; the commercialisation and commodification of sexuality; the `trade' in bodies and desire; sexuality and domination, violence and the regulation of women.
Assessment One essay (3000 words): 40%
