Objectives On completion of this subject, students should have an appreciation of the various theoretical approaches used to understand and explain the process of ageing; developed a critical awareness of the experience of ageing in a number of settings; acquired and further developed basic skills involved in social research; recognised the micro- macro-connections in the explanations of the phenomenon of ageing; become familiar with the implications of an ageing population such as in contemporary Australia; obtained an understanding of the underlying approaches and ramifications of public policies in health and welfare directed towards the aged.
Synopsis Social factors associated with ageing, historically and cross-culturally. Social, economic and political consequences of ageing populations in advanced societies with particular attention to Australia. Bioethical issues and ageing. Retirement, time, lifestyle and lifecycle. Social theory and old age.
