Objectives At the end of this subject, students develop an awareness of the relativistic nature of deviant and criminal behaviour; understanding of the sociology of deviance and its central issues; ability to critically examine conceptual and theoretical frameworks for understanding and analysing deviant and criminal behaviour in society.

Synopsis Conceptual problems in the field of study. Sociological and psychological perspectives: medical model, psychoanalytical models, structural-functionalist, crosscultural, Marxist, feminist, symbolic interactionist. Substantive areas: mental illness, crime, domestic violence and sexual deviations (eg paedophiles, transvestites, transsexuals).
