Introduction to Russian IA

Objectives On completing this subject and RUS1020 the student should be able to read and understand simple Russian texts; be able to understand basic spoken Russian and conduct a simple conversation in Russian; be able to write simple sentences in Russian; and have acquired an understanding of the cultural background of Russian.

Synopsis This subject is intended for students with no knowledge of Russian. It consists of two parts: (1) a survey of basic grammar and the development of reading, writing, comprehension and conversation skills (four hours per week); (2) an introduction to Russian (and other Slavic) culture (one hour per week).

Assessment Written (1000 words): 20%
* Examinations (3 hours): 60%
* Oral work: 20%
