Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should be able to conduct research into one or other of the core political institutions, or controversies surrounding constitutional design.

Synopsis The subject covers the characteristics and operation of constitutional democracy in Australia, and selected political debates of contemporary import. It includes the following topics: political traditions and the growth of government; political culture and citizenship; the hybrid with special reference to the role of the Senate; constitutional reform; governmental reform; contemporary party political debate.

Assessment Précis exercise (1500 words): 20%
* Essay (4500 words): 40%
* Examination (3 hours): 40%
