Objectives As for PLT2250 but with the added objectives of developing an appreciation of the relationship between late modernity as a global process of cultural significance and the erosion of traditional notions of difference. Also, on completing this subject at third year level students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the role played by global capitalism in generating and sustaining these cultural dynamics and how this poses a challenge to the legitimacy of postcolonial states in East Asia.

Assessment Tutorial attendance, oral presentation and participation (equivalent to 1000 words): 20%
* Essay in which third-year students will be required to consult a wider range of texts than that expected of second-year students (3000 words): 40%
* Seen examination in which third-year students will be required to answer questions requiring a higher level of conceptual sophistication than that expected of second-year students (2 hours): 40%
