Objectives As for PLT2020 but with the added objectives of developing an appreciation of the problematic nature of inherited notions of difference, such as `East' and `West' and how the erosion of these concepts impacts upon established political practices and institutions. Also, on completing this subject at third year level students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the role played by new developments in electronic communication in eroding traditional conceptions of identity and forging new political alliances across national boundaries.

words) and participation: 20%
* Essay (3000 words) requiring a wider
engagement with texts than is expected of second year: 40% [breve] Seen
examination (2 hours) requiring a higher level of conceptual sophistication
