Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject students are exptected to have acquired an understanding of the operation of political power among the formal and informal institutions of Australian state politics and the place of State governments within the federation.

Synopsis The subject involves detailed analyses of the functions of State governments and comparative studies of State electoral systems and elections, State party systems, leadership styles, and the political economies of the States. The subject concentrates on Victoria and Queensland and includes appraisals of recent governments in these States.

Assessment Class test (1 hour): 20%
