Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject students are expected to have acquired an understanding of the operations of the concepts, conflict and democracy in industrial relations in Australia and the relative power of trade unions, employers and the state.

Synopsis The subject examines the politics of industrial relations within the Australian context. Topics include the government, the state and industrial relations; structures of employee-employer organisations; political ideology and industrial relations; trade union involvement in political and social issues, unions and political parties; industrial democracy, the `decline' of unionism.

Assessment Class test (1 hour): 20%
* Essay (3000 words): 30%

* Examination (2 hours): 30%
