Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should have an appreciation of the problems facing Australia in its relations with its Asian neighbours; be aware of different Asian cultures, value systems and societal forces; be able to demonstrate knowledge of a wide range of empirical material; and have developed research techniques and conceptual abilities.

Synopsis Australia's geography and its history have in the past been in conflict, but now Australia is actively seeking a place and a role in Asia. The origins of Australia's traditional attitudes and policies towards Asia are examined and contemporary changes and developments considered. Asian perceptions of Australia are also discussed. Controversial issues, such as human rights and the media, are analysed. The impact of the `Blainey debate' on recent immigration and refugee policies is assessed. The subject surveys Australia's diplomatic relations with Asian countries and regional organisation. The Asian security environment is discussed together with Australia's responses. The question of seeking new defence partners in Asia is raised. Special attention will be paid to Australia's relations with its major trading partners in Asia and the prospects for future expansion. The value of foreign aid in promoting the welfare of Asians and advancing Australian interests in the region is measured. The role of the arts, culture and education in building bridges with our Asian neighbours is analysed.
