Objectives The aim of the subject is to provide an introduction to important strands in twentieth century European thought, in particular those influenced by Heidegger's Being and time.

Synopsis The subject concentrates on the project of reading and coming to understand Heidegger's complex text. There will be a short introduction to Husserl's phenomenology discussing the relationship between Husserl's phenomenology and Heidegger's `way into being'. Then selected passages of Being and time will be analysed in detail, in order to throw light on the meaning and origins of Heidegger's influence on recent French philosophy, in particular, his influence on Sartre and critique of Sartre's use of his concepts. There will also be some discussion of the development of his ideas by Derrida.

Assessment Two essays (3000 words each): 50% each
* One essay may optionally be replaced by a 3-hour examination
