Interdisciplinary performance project

M Coe and J McQuarrie

6 points
* 3 hours per week
* First semester
* Clayton

Objectives At the completion of this subject students should have had experience in the processes of making two kinds of theatrical performance, that based on play-texts or libretti, and that based on other points of departure. Students should also have developed the capacity to critique these processes in the light of readings on contemporary theatre practice.

Synopsis This subject will investigate two possible ways of making a performance. In the first instance we will work as a group, to look at some methodologies for making non-text or libretto based performance. These investigations will result in a showing of the new work. In the second half of semester we will take selected scenes from contemporary playtexts or libretti and again look at methodologies of rehearsal, this time including exercises on action and character. Again we will present a showing of the work. There will be plenty of time made available to discuss issues arising from these practices in the light of selected readings on contemporary theatre practitioners. Students will be then be asked to write up some aspect of the performance processes of one of their projects.
