Music of Southeast Asia I: Indonesia

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject should have a basic knowledge of the history and styles of the music-cultures of Indonesia together with a knowledge of the music theory and terminology, performance techniques, and a framework in which to identify, categorise and assess selected styles.

Synopsis As for MUS3830. This subject deals with musical, aesthetic, social and ritual concepts and practices as expressed in the musical life of Indonesian cultures, with particular reference to selected performances of music and dance, the relationships between music and the related arts, and the topology of musical instruments in Indonesia.

Assessment: Written (4000 words): 40%
* Examination (1.5 hours): 45%
* Assignments: 15%
* Fourth-year students will be required to complete an additional research paper.
