Objectives Upon successful completion of the subject students should have a basic knowledge of musical, cultural and commercial issues and styles of popular music in Australia and Asia, a framework to identify, categorise and assess these popular music styles; and an understanding of how to write about the music through critical observation and analysis.

Synopsis As for MUS3270. Study of the relationships between popular music and society, culture and economic forces; and of popular musical genres in Australia and Asia, with special reference to India, Indonesia, Vietnam, China and Japan.

Assessment: Written (3000 words): 40%
* Examination (2 hours): 40%
* Listening tests: 20%
