Objectives On successful completion of the subject, students should have an understanding of the complexity of the relationship between a text and its musical setting in the song as well as a number of methods of analytical inquiry which can be applied specifically to the song.

Synopsis As for MUS3210. The subject aims to familiarise students with various research methods appropriate to musicology. In particular the subject provides an introduction to the practical aspects of historical musicology and ethnomusicology, concentrating on methodologies associated with bibliographic studies, textual criticism, archival research, organology, iconography, and performance practice.
