Music of Southeast Asia II: Thailand

Objectives Upon successful completion this subject students should have a basic knowledge of the history and styles of the music-cultures of Thailand together with a knowledge of the music theory and terminology, performance techniques, and a framework to identify, categorise and assess selected styles.

Synopsis This subject deals with musical, aesthetic, social and ritual concepts and practices as expressed in the musical life of Thailand's cultures, with particular reference to selected performances of music and dance, the relationships between music and the related arts, and the topology of musical instruments in Thailand.

Assessment Written (2500 words): 40%
* Examination (3 hours): 45%
* Assignments (500 words): 15%
