Modern Greek language and culture A

* Prerequisites: VCE Modern Greek or equivalent knowledge of the languge.

Objectives Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the main features of the phonology of Greek; the main procedures for word coinage in Greek; the way in which the phonology and vocabulary of the Greek language have changed over the last two centuries; and key issues in modern Greek history and culture. They will also be expected to demonstrate mastery of selected features of standard Greek morphology orally and in writing.

Synopsis The subject consolidates prior knowledge of modern Greek, and introduces students to the study of modern Greek culture and thought through (1) practical language work and a systematic study of the language; and (2) reading authentic texts (including creative literature) in Greek and discussing them in Greek orally and in writing. Topics studied include the Greek folk songs and traditional society; the Ottoman period and the Greek War of Independence; the `language problem'; Vasilis Arvanitis, a study in levendia.

Assessment Essay (2000 words in English or Greek): 25% Examination (2 hours): 50%
* Language assignments and exercises, oral test: 25%
