Probabilistic models and statistical inference

Objectives To develop skills required to model situations involving uncertainty. To investigate the properties of various estimators.

Synopsis Random variables and probability distributions. Particular distributions and applications. Expected value and variance. Linear combinations of variables (lightly). Properties of estimators. Power curves. Sample size determinations. Parameter estimation - method of moments, maximum likelihood.

Assessment Three assignments: 30%
* Examination (1.5 hours): 70%
