Objectives To develop the students' skills in the use of descriptive statistics to gain an insight into and undertanding of a data set. To develop a basis for statistical inference.

Synopsis An introductory subject in applied statistics covering descriptive and exploratory statistics, data analysis and statistical inference. The use of the statistical computing package Minitab is incorporated into the subject which is applications-oriented and not mathematically driven. Examples and problems are chosen from areas of interest to Arts students.

Assessment Examination (3 hours): 70%
* Assignment: 10%
* Two tests (45 minutes): 20%
