Lexicography and corpus linguistics

Objectives To introduce students to practical and theoretical aspects of the recording of language, especially as they emerge in the interpretation of language corpora and in its compilation into dictionaries.

Synopsis This subject, which will be project-based, will critically survey, and attempt to apply, frameworks proposed in the current literature relevant to a subfield of linguistics suitable for computational treatment, that of modern lexicography and of corpus linguistics. The subject will draw on insights from linguistics, computer science and cognitive science.

Assessment Written assignments (4000 words): 90%
* Practical exercises and class participation: 10%
